Description:
The Shirley Anita Chisholm Oratorical Contest celebrates the life and legacy of Congresswoman Chisholm by engaging young people through the scholastic exercise of public speaking.
Contest Rules:
1. Participants are required to select one (out of six provided) Shirley Chisholm Quote and expound upon its meaning in a 5-7 minutes speech (700 to 1000 written words). The speech must be written, but reading the speech verbatim is strongly discouraged. The provided quotes are:

2. Provide a cover page that includes, title of speech, full name, grade level, age, address, phone number and email address. Please be sure to provide sources of research on a separate Work Cited page.
Written submission of the speech must be emailed in advance. The deadline is February 10th at 11:59pm. All written speeches are to be emailed to contactus@centralchristiankcmo.org in a Please type “ in the subject line and look for a reply message that states your submission has been received.
3. A limit of ten participants will be chosen to deliver the speech on February 29th at Central Christian Church (DOC), 3801 E. Linwood Blvd. Kansas City MO, 64128.
4. Participants must be within the age range of 10 to 14 years old.

2nd place wins $75
3rd place wins $50
All other speech competitors receive two movie tickets to Cinemark

Judges will score each speaker according to these three categories:

Content – The information shared exemplifies substantiated research and supports the chosen Shirley Chisholm quote.

Delivery – The participant’s delivery of perspective persuasively connected with the audience.

Creativity – The participant used an oratorical style, or technique that was original and captivating to the audience.
A score of 10 indicates the highest points available in each category. For example, a total score of 30 points indicates a perfect score in all three categories.
The Shirley Anita Chisholm Oratorical Contest is open to all members of the community. On the day of the event we ask that all attendees dress in business attire.
